What is Carême about?

careme plot

Apple TV+

The series stars Benjamin Voisin as Antonin Carême, a young pastry chef with big dreams. It’s a historical drama that contrasts the revolutionary fervor of the time with the opulent kitchens of Napoleon Bonaparte's court.

Antonin, along with his father, runs a humble patisserie while secretly sympathizing with the revolutionary movement. When Antonin helps First Consul Napoleon during a medical crisis, he’s offered a position at the Tuileries Palace. However, despite the honor, Antonin turns down the job, shocking his father.

But after his father is imprisoned, Antonin is forced to work with the ambitious politician Talleyrand to secure his father's release. Antonin agrees to spy on Bonaparte while working in the palace kitchens, all while harboring a personal vendetta against Napoleon for the death of his sisters. Meanwhile, he develops a complicated and smoldering attraction to Joséphine Bonaparte, the future Empress.

So, what's with The Bear comparison?

The thematic overlap between Carême and The Bear is hard to ignore. Both shows center on high-pressure kitchens, intense character drama, and chef-centric storytelling, while exploring the complexities of ambition and obsession.

Carême is also a period piece, set in the 1800s, following the life of a pastry chef who strives to make a name for himself in the culinary world while navigating the complex French aristocracy.

How does Carême explore ambition and obsession in the kitchen?

The series delves deep into the characters' emotional intensity, much like The Bear. Antonin's arc is full of tension, driven by both personal and professional ambition. His internal struggle with the ideals of revolution and the reality of serving in Napoleon’s kitchens creates a compelling narrative of obsession. As the stakes rise, so does his emotional and moral turmoil.

Both shows hone in on the destructive nature that comes with being a chef in a competitive culinary landscape. Carmy from The Bear explores the complexities of an aspiring chef who battles with recurring themes of trauma and self-doubt as he consistently pushes himself to save his family's failing restaurant.

Antonin is forced to rise above his humble beginnings and create dishes that adhere to a king's standards. Both characters also routinely experience self-doubt in the form of perfectionism. Antonin’s desire for recognition perfectly mirrors Carmy’s inherent desire to prove himself to not only the people around him, but people from his past as well.
