Crime lovers everywhere are in for a treat with Secrets We Keep, Netflix's newest mini-series thriller that debuted on May 15. Set in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Denmark, the gripping six-part show centers on the disappearance of Ruby, a young Filipino au pair, and a neighbor, Cecilie, who starts to suspect something sinister happened to her.
Ingeborg Topsøe, the creator behind Secrets We Keep, felt this particular backdrop would be "especially compelling" for a crime drama.
"What happens when care and intimacy within the home are outsourced to an au pair? What does that stir in us, and in those closest to us? Does it reveal the best in us or the worst?" she asked Netflix.
Per Fly, who directed the series, also called it a "story about social class," saying, "Beneath the polished surface, secrets and conflicts are simmering. I was curious to explore what happens when the facade begins to crack, and the human truths emerge."

What is Secrets We Keep about?
Set in a wealthy suburb just north of Copenhagen, the series follows the unraveling of a seemingly idyllic community, where practically every household employs a Filipino au pair. Cecilie and her husband, Mike, are no different.
They rely on their devoted au pair, Angel, who has become an essential part of their family life. But when Ruby, Angel's close friend and the au pair for their next-door neighbors Rasmus and Katarina, suddenly goes missing, unease starts to spread throughout the neighborhood.
Cecilie begins questioning Ruby's employers, becomes suspicious, and, alongside Angels, starts to quietly investigate the disappearance.
"However, the case of the missing foreigner is a low priority for the police, and the newly minted investigator Aicha needs all the assistance she can get," the show's synopsis reads. "Cecilie and Angel are ready to help, and gradually, the power structures and privileges within the beautiful homes start to be exposed."
As secrets begin to spill, the exploitative dynamics at play in the au pair system are revealed. But Cecilie's quest for answers hits closer to home than she anticipated, leading her to question not only the people around her but also the very foundation of the life she's built.
