Netflix's New Period Romance 'The Leopard' Is Basically An Italian 'Bridgerton'

First, Shonda Rhimes gave Regency England a steamy glow-up with the hit series Bridgerton—and now, it’s Italy’s turn. The Leopard, Netflix’s six-part adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s book, sees British creatives Benji Walters and Richard Warlow (The Serpent) teaming up with director Tom Shankland (SAS Rogue Heroes) to give 19th-century Sicily a modern, prestige-TV polish. The result? A brooding, lavish period drama that trades in sun-drenched estates, forbidden love, and fading power.

Here's what to know about it before you binge!

At the center of this story is Fabrizio Corbèra, Prince of Salina—a Sicilian aristocrat facing the slow erosion of his status as Garibaldi’s forces sweep through Italy, promising unification and social upheaval.

Fabrizio has spent a lifetime moving through the world with unchecked privilege: he brings his priest along to visit his mistress, and when questioned about his cheating ways, casually notes that he’s never even seen his wife’s navel. But times are changing, and suddenly, even a prince has to play nice with self-made colonels to keep access to his estate.

The nobility isn’t being wiped out, but they’re being pushed aside—forced to trade power for survival, tradition for negotiation. For a man who once commanded every room he walked into, having to charm his way into relevance feels like the ultimate insult. He’s not just aging—he’s fading.

The show captures that universal tension of being left behind—Fabrizio isn’t just reckoning with politics, he’s facing his own irrelevance. The fall of the aristocracy has always made for juicy drama, and The Leopard serves it with just the right mix of grandeur and gloom. There’s schadenfreude in watching power slip away, but also an eerie sense of loss.

Meanwhile, his daughter Concetta is caught in her own battle—expected to join a convent while pining for her cousin Tancredi. He’s dashing, reckless, and increasingly drawn to Angelica (played by Deva Cassel, real-life daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel), the radiant daughter of a nouveau riche mayor. She’s clearly been raised to charm her way into a higher tier of society, and Tancredi, torn between love, ambition, and revolution, is all too susceptible.

Of course, this isn’t the first time The Leopard has hit the screen. Luchino Visconti’s 1963 film, starring Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon, still holds a mythic reputation. That version leaned heavily into baroque visuals and gothic tension. Netflix’s take is cleaner and more restrained—beautiful, yes, but a little too polished to capture the same cinematic magic.

Still, this updated Leopard is more than a history lesson. It’s about power, pride, and the quiet heartbreak of watching the world move on without you. Just don’t mistake Fabrizio for a mob boss—this isn’t The Godfather. It’s slower, sadder, and somehow more honest about how legacy really fades.
